Dental Tourism is an integral part of Medical Tourism. The rising number of quality dental clinics have made Kerala an ideal spot for Dental Tourism.

Kerala had already risen as a brand in Medical and Ayurvedic Tourism. You can get quality dental treatment for just 10% of the costs incurred, if done in Australia and Europe.

Dental Tourism registed a 30% growth in Kerala. In 2008 about 5000 dental patients visited Kerala, thereby giving crores of forex to Kerala.

The tourists stay in Homestays, in Resorts and Star Hotels. Quality dental clinics have sprung up as more and more dental tourists visit ” God’s Own Country “.

Route canal treatment, dental implant crown, mona treatment and lamination are some of the treatments the tourists go in for.

Dr Raj Krishnan, ceo of Krishnan’s Dental Clinic, says that Kerala is in for a quantum leap, as far as Medical Tourism is concerned. England, Germany, Austria, US and Switzerland are some of the countries the tourists come from. Dental tourists Peter Morgan and Elizabeth Harrison say that you get quality dental treatmenf for just ten per cent cost in Kerala and that is what had attracted them to this ” Land of Coconuts” ! They are coming for the second time to Kerala !

Three airports which grace Kerala, Homestays, Resorts and Hotels – all these make the tourists journey easy and effortless. Ayurvedic treatment also can be had, as dental treatments do not require much drugs !

Those who work in this field are now trying to get the Accreditation from NABH.

Cruise Tourism is on the rise in Kerala, despite the global recession. Decorative Passenger Ship Touism or Cruise Tourism is on an upward curve in Kerala, as 36 cruise ships are visiting Kochi in 2009 fiscal ! 22000 foreign tourists and 10,000 ship workers will be touring Kochi !

March will see 11 cruise ships. Of which 4 has already reached the Queen of the Arabian Sea. Seven more, inlcuding the big cruise ships – Queen Mary II and Queen Victoria will be visiting Kochi. 12000 foreign tourists will be visiting this month alone. Six thousand sailors also. From Queen Mary II, 2600 foreign visitors and 1300 crew members are expected. This Queen of the Sea will be reaching Kochi on Wednesday and will be in Kochi for one day

With increased acceptance of Ayurveda around the world, a newfound enthusiasm is visible among the entrepreneurs of Kerala to offer Ayurveda treatments to domestic and foreign tourists.

This prompted Government of Kerala to certify the credentials of all Ayurveda centers, Ayurvedic massage centers, Ayurvedic treatment centers across Kerala.

The responsibility of classifying Ayurvedic centers reached Kerala Tourism Department.

The classification of Ayurvedic centers is of two types: Green Leaf and Olive Leaf. To be classified as an Olive Leaf or a Green Leaf certified center, the Ayurvedic center must meet basic requirements like qualified technical staff, treatment and rest rooms, quality of medicines, quality equipments etc.

Additional qualification marks for obtaining Green Leaf certificate include an in house medicinal plant garden, abundance of greenery, picturesque location and quiet atmosphere.

Ayurveda centers with Olive Leaf or Green Leaf Certificate are approved by Kerala Government.

Mural paintings are the valued treasures of Kerala. These fresco paintings are classified as ‘Frecco-secco’. The paintings are done on walls that are completely dry and a lime medium is used. It originated from the Dravidian art of Kalamezhuthu. This traditional painting has a history back from 9th to 12th century A.D.

White, yellow, black, red are the pure colors to be used as per ‘Shilparatna’. Ocher yellow, Ocher red, white, bluish green and pure green are the primary colors in Murals.

The dyes for its preparation are made out of vegetables, chemicals etc.

• White – from lime
• Black- carbon soot of lamps
• Red and yellow- minerals
• Blue- indigo ferra
• Deep red- lac

A fine coating of resin is done after the painting in order to make a shining appearance. Flat, medium and fine types of brushes are used to paint the colors. The colors are mixed in wooden utensils. The foundation is done with dung cryons and then the paintings are done.

Hindu temples also hold murals on the themes derived from the religious texts. The Kanthaloor temple and the Trivikramapuram at Thiruvananthapuram, Ajanad at Idukki have the oldest frescos in Kerala. some other places with murals are- Thiruvanchikulam (Kerala’s own tradition of murals), temples at Vaikom, Ettumanoor, Thrikkodithaanam and Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple Thiruvananthapuram.

The churches in Kerala also display many murals on Christian themes. Some of them are churches at Mulanthuruthy, Chepad, Edappalli and Vechur.

The unique works of Kerala frescos provide an excellent architectural style. The deep study of it will provide one with valuable information about the art and culture of Kerala. The murals that concentrate only on icons give an incomparable beauty to it.

Foreign visitors to Kerala sometimes face with problems like prolonged glances or staring by people, although there aren’t any instances of physical aggression. Although there are locations where you can relax in a bikini, there are places you need to avoid it and wear dressing that covers your legs and belly.

S Photographed by Anoop Negi

Kerala has moderate climate almost throughout the year. Cotton clothes are most suited for the climate here. Woollen clothes would be too hot for most of the areas. Kerala society is quite a conservative society. Look at the dressing of local men and women – most of them cover their body almost completely.

Wearing loose clothes that cover the whole of legs and trunk can certainly help you avoid embarrassing stares from the locals.

Nudity is banned in India and women can’t sunbath topless in any part of Kerala, even if it is a private beach. Get a step ahead and cover your body – this step alone is enough to avoid the uncomfortable gazes from all different sides, while you go shopping.

The key is to blend in. You can blend in by wearing full length clothing. This way, you won’t easily become the centre of attention.

Inside the hotels, Ayurvedic treatment centres and at places that offer private areas, it is OK to sunbath in bikini. There are also beaches like Kovalam, where crowds of foreigners take a sunbath in bikini only. These are areas, where it is accepted and expected of tourists to enjoy themselves without any inhibitions. For other places, just be cautious.

There aren’t any security risks though. Kerala is a safe destination for tourists from any part of the world. This article is just to tell you how to avoid the uncomfortable stares, which many visitors, especially the westerners have complained about.

Make sure your trip to Kerala, either for pleasure trip or for Ayurvedic treatments a pleasant one.

SANJOG KR

Kerala tourism has flourished so well in the past few years because of the exciting Kerala houseboat tours. If you are planning vacations in Kerala with your partner, family or friends- a trip to the luxurious houseboats should not be missed. Houseboats in Kerala are specially designed to let the tourists explore the virgin lands and divine natural beauty. This medium also offers wonderful opportunity to stay close to the mother nature.

Have you ever wished to explore the rustic village life in Kerala while staying on waters? Have you ever dreamed of watching skiff-fishermen launching their cockleshell boats? Have you ever wanted to spot the large flocks of domesticated ducks waddling down to the water from thatched houses on the banks? – If yes, then Houseboats in Kerala serve as the best possible medium for all your desires.

Kettuvalloms (huge traditional boats in Kerala) were earlier used to carry tonnes of rice, spices and other such materials. In the past few years, these have been reformed as ‘Luxurious Houseboats’ to provide the tourists with the true joy of spending their vacations on enchanting backwaters. Houseboats provide the wonderful opportunity to discover the enchanting backwaters and lively villages of Kerala.

Features of Houseboats

Kettuvalloms are converted into houseboats with using only natural products like bamboo mats, sticks, wood of the aracanut and coconut trees, coir mats, wooden planks etc. Even the arrangement for lighting is done with solar panels.

Modern Houseboats are equipped with all the comforts and amenities of a star rated hotel including furnished bedrooms, modern toilets, cozy living rooms, a kitchen and even a balcony for angling. Each houseboat is also provided with a sun deck, spacious living/dining area, spacious passage, fire extinguishers, safe fuel storage facilities, good quality linen blankets and towels, and professional cooks.

The Vembanad Lake in Kerala is known as the largest backwater stretch of the entire state. It takes you to Alappuzha, Kottayam, Kochi and several other places. These eco-friendly houseboats take you to a journey of the untouched and inaccessible rural Kerala.

The most attractive feature of your Kerala tour is undoubtedly the luxurious Kerala houseboat. These houseboats not only provide the luxurious facilities and comforts of a star rated hotel, but also provide the excellent opportunity to explore the divine green beauty while living on waters. Plan a Kerala houseboat tour while on a Kerala trip and stay as close to the mother nature as possible.

Ayurveda is a traditional system of healing that has been practised in India for centuries. This system of medicine is widely practised in Kerala and its medical benefits have been recognized worldwide.

Ayurveda which evolved in India around 600 B.C., is based on the theory that the body has three humors vatta, pitta and kapha, which need to be kept in balance for the body to remain in a state of health.

Ayurveda treats not merely the symptoms of a condition or the condition itself, but the body as a whole. This holistic approach to health, stresses on the need for all toxins to be eliminated from the body to improve the overall health of the body. Traditionally people in Kerala undergo an annual series of treatments in the monsoon season to improve resistance and eliminate the causes of illness, to ensure a state of good health in the year ahead.

Rasayana Chikitsa: Rejuvenation Therapy involves treating the body with herbal oils, baths and herbal massages to tone up the entire system and increase resistance to disease.

Kayakalpa Chikitsa: Body Immunization and Longevity Treatment is a treatment to prevent the processes of ageing. It involves eating or drinking specially prepared gruels or potions, which have herbs and medicated plants ground into them. These special food items improve the resistance of the body.

Sweda Karma: The process of taking medicated steam baths is used to treat conditions such as obesity, chronic pain and to improve skin and muscle tone, as well as remove toxins from the body.

Ayurveda is used to treat many different conditions. Problems of a serious medical nature such as cervical spondylitis and slipped disc can be treated by ayurvedic massage. Cosmetic conditions such as improving the condition of the skin and hair can be also be treated by Ayurveda, which is a complete programme of rejuvenation.

Do note that when you enter an Ayurveda center or spa, the masseurs and practitioners must be trained and certified by Kottakal Arya Vaidya Shala, the Kerala Ayurveda Pharmacy, Arsha Yoga Vidya Peetam, Coimbatore, or some other well-known institute which is recognized by the government of Kerala, India.
